HeartSmart History
HeartSmart, the Cliff R. Roop Cardiac Support and Education Foundation began as a group project for four members of the Leadership Anne Arundel Flagship Class of 2000. The initial goal was to give an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for placement in the Arundel Center in memory of Councilman Cliff Roop who tragically died of a heart attack at a council meeting in January 2000. Early fundraising efforts were so successful that the team was able to purchase more AEDs and decided to expand its mission to include donating AEDs to be placed in other public facilities in Anne Arundel County and make available CPR training and AED certification to support this endeavor.
Work
Through an annual raffle, 5K RunWalk fundraiser, generous support from business sponsors, and a partnership with the Anne Arundel County Office of Risk Management, HeartSmart has been responsible for the placement of more than 35 AEDs in public areas of Anne Arundel County where citizens gather. Through the partnership with the County’s Office of Risk Management, HeartSmart can supplement placement of AEDs through their office, greatly enhancing the Foundation’s ability to place more AEDs where they are most needed as well as facilitating CPR training and AED certification in the use of these life-saving devices.
